Niamh, Michael and Eimear

The owners Niamh and Eimear opened this authentic Irish restaurant between Charles St. & 10th St. in the West Village, a couple of months ago and it is already an in place to go in the area.  The Galway Hooker is named after this black boat which is a traditional sailing boat used in Galway Bay off the coast of Ireland.  Known for the  beautiful reddish brown. rust, and maroon sails, these colors are echoed in ever area of the restaurant’s decor.  All the interesting items throughout the restaurant are imported direct from Ireland.   When you enter you  feel as if you have just entered a pub in Ireland where the decor is exquisite and authentically Irish.  The second level has a pool table where customers get together and enjoy a game and the third level is where you can step up to this magnificent bar  where  pictures  of the Galway hooker sailboat is  above the bar and enjoy a drink.

Gail, Wine & Dine News,  enjoyed the fresh salads that had carrots cut like Sails which made them  inventive and also carried the tradition of the Hooker, and her  Roast Beef Sandwich, ($8)  was tender and delicious.   Sheila, New York Times, enjoyed the Apple Cheddar & Arugula Salad ($11) and grilled Salmon with lime and dill ($15) which was very special.  We enjoyed eating in the  “Confessional Dining Room” where there is a working fireplace.    There are many interesting appetizers, and sandwiches such as the Roast Turkey with stuffing ($9) and the very hearty Hooker Burger topped with Irish bacon, cheddar and a fried egg. ($9)  They have Turkey and Veggie burgers with Cranberry Mayo, which is a nice touch.

Sylvia Harte, The Irish Reporter:  “Have an Irish Shandy with chicken pot pie filled with large chunks of chicken & wonderful fresh vegetables ($14) It is like being in Ireland.  Deserts are amazing too.  The succulent Bread and Butter Pudding ($7), the Apple Crumble ($7) & the luscious Banoffi pie with custard  will complete  your dining experience at the Downtown Galway Hooker”.

 Chef/Owner Jerry Chen & Sylvia

Chef/Owner Jerry Chen & Sylvia

Lichee Nut Restaurant is located  on the lower level of Montague Street where steps lead down to host/owner Jerry Chen who will serve a cuisine that is unbelievable.    The success of these dishes is partly due to the extensive training of  their Chefs,  especially Chef  Ahmen who is a master of Asian cookery.  They  combine the fare of old China with the many new ideas and skills emerging from all over China and they change the style  and the design of dishes with each season.   Critics raved about  the appetizers they loved.  The Steamed Shrimp and Vegetable Dumplings ($4.50) Fantail Shrimp ($5.95) and the crispy  Bean Curd Cakes ($3.50 for 6) A Must Try.   Some of the stars on the very Asian menu are the intriguing Scallops & Shrimp ($12.95)  the Lichee Prawns ($12.50), Shrimp lightly sauteed with delicious Lichee Fruit and mixed Chinese Vegetables.  The Steak and Shrimp ($11.50) with tender Fillet Mignon pieces and gigantic Shrimp is spectacular.  The Boc Choy, Eggplant and Bamboo Steamed Vegetarian specialties are unmatched.
We can understand why “Healthy, Exotic, Fresh and Flavorful” is written all over the Internet about Lichee Nut.

Sylvia Harte  (The Irish Reporter) enjoyed the Orange Crispy Chicken ($11.50), chunks of Chicken sauteed with Orange Peel Flavor.

Gail Gerson Witte (Wine, Dine & Leisure Time) said she is returning for the Sauteed Beef with Scallops ($11.95),  Scallops  and Sliced Beef with Vegetables in the Chef’s special brown sauce.

This family oriented restaurant was named after a town in Naples Italy, and upon entering I felt as if we were in for a special evening, reminiscent of the small cafes along the coast of the Mediterranean natural brick walls and a charming fireplace, along with a petite bar, set the stage for a parade of very tasty dishes.

We were thrilled with the Spiedini di Pesce, a marvelous combo of Shrimp, Scallopsand Calamari Skewers over delicious home made, beautifully flavored Cous Cous ($12.50)  The amazing Calamari over Fennel, Arugula, Orange Slices and Olives ($12.50) is a marvelous taste and the homemade Green Fettuccine in a Bolognese Sauce ($12.50) was so authentically scrumptious, I could not stop eating.

The exquisite Rigatoni with Fried Eggplant and Ricotta Salata ($12.50) is a must try for all who love the pure and flavorful fruits of the earth.  I was overwhelmed with my all natural Chicken Breast with Capers, and Gail Gerson Witte, raved about her Veal Polpette Balla with Grilled Polenta and Mushrooms ($14.50) and Len Trugman of Channel 7 News, was thrilled with the very special Branzino Al Forno Con Patate.  This baked Branzino Fish with Potatoes and String Beans ($22.00) was a dining souvenir.

A few of the inspired desserts on the menu, that we loved was the luscious Crema Catalana (Spanish Creme Brule ($7.50).  The Addictive Salame di Cioccolato served with pure white Chocolate Fondue ($8.00) and the Assorted Cheese Plate with Fruit Preserves ($11.00).  The menu also includes Gelati e Sorbetti in all flavors. All of us raved about the  delicately, delicious Tiramiso ($7.50).

The wine list is par excellence but the wonderful assortment of dessert wines such as the Dindarello, a delicate white Dessert Wine made from 100% Moscato Flor d’ Arancio with aromas of citrus, honey
and flowers ($9.00 glass)

sylvia_white_rightHello Everyone and Welcome to my Blog!

I have been doing Reviews with Gail Gerson Witte,  owner of Wine, Dine, and Leisure Time, for the past twenty years. We have traveled and experienced the finest Restaurants, Health and Beauty Spas, Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Our reviews are printed in the Daily News, New York Times, Star Ledger, Asbury Park Press, and The Irish Echo.

At a review we invite other reporters (and an occasional celebrity), to join us to critique what they experience. This is then incorporated into the article for the newspaper.

I look forward to posting future reviews which will be of interest to the public.
